Methodist Children's Hospital opened in 1998 as the only hospital in San Antonio and South Texas designed and built especially for children. The Methodist Children's Heart Institute features a multidisciplinary team of experienced board-certified pediatric cardiologists dedicated to complex congenital cardiac and thoracic diseases, from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood. With six cardiac catheterization suites, the Methodist Children's Heart Institute is the only hospital in South Texas providing interventional and diagnostic procedures including PDA coils, balloon septostomies, balloon dilations and ASD device closures. Cardiothoracic specialty areas include neonatal and infant heart surgery, single ventricle and hypoplastic left heart syndrome, arrhythmia surgery, beating heart surgery, cardiac failure and mechanical support.

Pediatric Cardiac Physician Assistant needed for the Congenital Heart Surgery Program

Job Description:

The Physician Assistant (PA) develops and maintains an active practice based on an expanded knowledge base of pathophysiology and pharmacology to provide comprehensive health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with cardiothoracic surgery needs in collaboration with and under the direct supervision of attending physician(s). Role includes clinical procedures, assist in the OR; assist with post-op management on the step down unit; assist with pre-op clinic assessments and post-op clinic follow-ups.

About Methodist Children’s Hospital:

The Congenital Heart Surgery Program at MCH performed more than 340 operative procedures in 2014 and enjoys an extensive catchment area and rapidly growing referral base in South and West Texas.

The candidate will be joining a senior congenital heart surgeon with over 20 years of experience in the field (and currently recruiting a second experienced CV surgeon). He/she will be working with a growing pediatric cardiology group of ten cardiologists. Dedicated and highly-skilled cardiac anesthesiologists cover all surgical cases.

The hospital is currently building a new children’s tower which will include a 12 bed dedicated Cardiovascular ICU and Telemetry area. The candidate will be expected to be involved in its design and implementation.

Education/Experience Required:

• Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program
• BS degree, MS preferred
• 2 years of PA experience in a CVICU, or similar ICU

Licensure/Certification Required:

• Current Texas Physician Assistant License
• Certification as a PA by the NCCPA
• Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS provider
• Prescriptive Authority/DEA within 1 year
